State Department on US race relations

Another sign that social issues are now a matter of international legal norms to be applied by jurists and other experts: the US State Department report on US compliance with the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination. It lists “lingering disparities,” Rodney King and Amadou Diallo as examples of how far we have to go to fulfill our legal obligations. Isn’t law wonderful?

On another front, you’ll be pleased to know that with Helms’ departure and President Bush supporting women’s rights in Afghanistan, the US may finally join the 168 countries that have approved the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women.
