Campus and bishop—what relation?
An interesting issue: Catholic campuses head for showdown over episcopal certification for teaching Catholic theology. Most academics object, on the grounds that would make them subject to the judgment of someone other than colleagues (Catholic or otherwise), their school’s administration, accrediting agencies, professional associations, various civil rights and equal opportunity authorities, etc. Presumably the bishops will find some way to avoid the issue; Cardinal Law hasn’t replied to those who requested the mandatum, and he told Boston College they didn’t have to worry about it. The article notes that lawsuits are a worry—in modern tolerant society people who don’t get with what the government thinks is the program find themselves in court.

Maybe we should stop requiring physics certification of physics professors at Catholic universities, since such requirements infringe upon the academic freedom of physicists. Posted by: Matt on May 30, 2002 11:07 AM |
