Rash of “Honor” Killings in Jordan

After promising police he wouldn’t harm her, a Jordanian man shot his daughter to death over the suspicion that she was having sexual relations outside marriage; in fact, she was a virgin. It was the third “honor” killing in Jordan in a week. Another man stabbed his 28-year-old sister to death with a hatchet and knife in her Amman home because, he told police afterwards, he could not tolerate rumors spread by friends and neighbors about his sister’s sexual relations. The third victim was a 24-year-old woman strangled with a telephone cord by her 20-year-old brother after her family learned she was pregnant before marrying her husband. The victim’s family celebrated her killing by offering sweets to friends and neighbors.

The Jordanian cabinet ruled last December to exempt those accused of “honor” killings from heavy sentences such as death.

Just think.

Not too many years ago, this story could have happened in Italy.

In fact, isn’t it the plot of more than one famous Italian opera?

Invariably, the man who does the dishonoring escapes scot-free. Muslim men play around all they want with women not their wives, each other and teenage boys, but the women pay the price. I might add that a Muslim man in a non-Muslim nation is like an alcoholic let loose in a liquor store. Party time! I wouldn’t let my female cat near one of them.

The equivalent of “honor killings” were once countenanced in some of the Mediterranean and Spanish-speaking countries, but I don’t think they were ever dumbly accepted as they are in the crazier Muslim lands. (Eastern Muslims aren’t so bad in their attitude to women.) A man shooting an adulterous wife was more acceptable — and that was a plot used in many operas! Even then, however, the woman was usually a tragic heroine and the husband who invoked his “rights” was portrayed as an unlikeable cuss.

I believe that an Italian man would be honor-bound to shoot his wife’s lover, as well.

Murder is murder no matter whatever terminology you choose to use for these apaling crimes. the sentences for these people is far too lenient, often ranging from a few months to a couple of years- THIS IS NOT ENOUGH AS A DETERANT!! may i also say that although these crimes are mostly carried out by so called “muslims”, there is nowhere in islam or the holy quran which encourages this practise - unfortunately these peple are nearly always uneducated, illiterate, and genrally they carry out there day to day life in a fairly “backwards-thining” manner. an example of this is that often these so caled “honor” killing are carried out by a relative at even the slightest rumour or gossip, in one extreme case, a man told courts that he had dreamt his wife was unfaithful so killed her. People should be forced to carry out a lengthy sentence in my opinion for these crimes and this may act as a deterant.
