Everything is something else
A rather neat application of the principle everything is really its opposite: Judging Judaism by the Numbers. Numbers don’t matter, the author says, because “the ongoing conversation that is Judaism can happen anywhere, between anyone.” Buddhism can be the triumph of Judaism. This author also tells us, fairly early in the piece, that “we are the descendants of a loose amalgamation of peoples united around a new idea”. Judaism as a propositional religion. Sound familiar? And what is that idea? “Judaism was built around the contention that human beings can make the world a better, more just place.” Need I say more? Hear, O Israel, the LORD your God is One. Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. Posted by: Charlie on November 21, 2002 9:30 AM At a Jewish bris I attended last year, the rabbi who spoke about the child becoming part of the Jewish people made it sound like the boy was signing up for lifelong membership in the Democratic Party.
