Official totalitarian-style symbolism in today’s London
One of VFR’s contributors alerted us to this amazing item, a poster that says “Secure Beneath the Watchful Eyes” and features disembodied eyes in the sky staring over a modernist city-scape. Looking at it, you’re sure that it’s something out of 1930s-era totalitarianism, or perhaps from the movie “Nineteen Eighty-Four.” In fact, it was put up all over today’s London by the Metropolitan Police. Also, since this is the Internet age, there is a “live” Web version of this Orwellian poster, with the largest disembodied eye blinking, that you can see at the website for London bus transport. An article at wired.com explains the posters and the surrounding controversy. Posted by Lawrence Auster at December 12, 2002 02:45 AM | Send Email entry |
