Hanson: It’s time to end NATO
In light of the deep and abiding hostility expressed by the Western Europeans toward the United States since 9/11, Victor Hanson concludes that it’s time for America to withdraw its military forces from Europe. Ditto South Korea. Posted by Lawrence Auster at January 31, 2003 09:30 AM | Send Comments
Isn’t Hanson one of the leading proponents of an aggressive Wilsonion foreign policy? He wants us to wage war (and station troops) in the Middle East. Is this more neocon inconsistency? Posted by: David on January 31, 2003 2:02 PMIn the article Hanson talks about withdrawing from the countries that currently resent us, particularly Germany, while perhaps expanding our military connection with the newer NATO members who are more friendly. I don’t think it’s an ideological preference he’s stating so much as a response to the real situation: that Western Europe has become anti-American and that much of this is like an adolescent resenting his parent. So, if we quietly pull back, maybe they’ll grow up. Posted by: Lawrence Auster on January 31, 2003 2:24 PMWasn’t Hanson saying that the Europeans have been against us ever since 9-11? Right after 9-11, Europe was very sympathetic. They supported us in tracking down and punishing the perpetrators. The Germans even sent some troops to Afghanistan. It is true that Europe does not support an invasion of Iraq. Posted by: David on February 1, 2003 4:01 PMThe anti-Americanism in Europe seems much broader than just opposition to a war on Iraq.
