An alternative to war?

For those interested in a reasoned alternative to President Bush’s projected war on Iraq, Jessica Matthews of the Carnegie Endowment has a fully worked out plan. David Frum summarizes and critiques it at National Review Online. (Believe me, I hate to be quoting neocons so frequently, but as long as most paleocons remain, at best, out to lunch on this vital national issue, I’m left with no choice.)

I am not sure politics stops at the water’s edge anymore. Perhaps President Clinton set the precedent by being elected President twice despite joining with foreigners to attack his country during war. Now President Bush basks in favorable ratings while leading an attack on his country by Mexico and other countries. The weapon is that of illegal immigration.

President Bush’s embraces foreigners such as President Fox of Mexico, who doesn’t support the war against Islam, but exiles American Tom Tancredo who supports the President’s war on Islam. Yet the President is not considered part of an anti-war right.

To say the least, this is confusing considering that people are considered part of the anti-war right if they insist America fight no war against Islam unless America also fights a war against illegal immigration. Despite Clinton’s behavior and Bush’s behavior, I expect the anti-war right will also be called anti-American.
