Denying the reality of Muslim American political violence
Every time an American Muslim has committed murder and mayhem against non-Muslims, the authorities attribute it to purely personal factors: abuse of prescription drugs, “road rage,” or a “work dispute.” The same is happening with Hasan Karim Akbar, the black American Muslim who attempted mass slaughter on his fellow soldiers and officers in the 101st Airborne in Kuwait. Army spokesmen talk variously about an “attitude problem,” a desire for “retribution,” and “resentment.” As the invaluable Daniel Pipes points out, “No one yet knows Akbar’s motives, but ignoring that [the attack] fits into a sustained pattern of political violence by American Muslims amounts to willful self-deception. When will officialdom acknowledge what is staring them in the face?” Posted by Lawrence Auster at March 25, 2003 11:24 AM | Send Comments
Well, Akbar’s family says he was goaded into it by racism: http://abcnews.go.com/sections/GMA/World/iraq_GMA030325Akbar_family_exclusive.html I am sure it is tough being a black Moslem in today’s integrated, tolerant, “don’t ask don’t tell” military. I can fully understand tossing grenades into the tents of fellow troops after putting up with such vicious racist intolerance. The right solution is to put Akbar on a generous disability pension, grant him a discharge, and immediately start an intensive campaign of sensitivity training for the troops in the Gulf. Sure the latter may create a few inconveniences in minor matters like prosecuting the war, but if we don’t get at the root causes we are just going to see more of the same. For one thing the media fears beings charges of racism in the second case. Hey, imagine how things would have been different if Cassius Clay had gone to prison as a draft dodger 30 years ago.
