Afghanistan now as ever

Why does September 11 mean we should care about this? Old warlord proves thorn in the side of Afghan government. Afghanistan has never been fully under the control of any government. On the whole, that has not been so bad for those on the scene. So why should our soldiers stay there and try to change their ways?

Failed nation states are breeding and training grounds for terrorism. The three greatest centers of Islamist terrorism are Afghanistan, Sudan, and Lebanon.
Take a look at South America. Eastern Columbia and the “Three corners” are two areas with limited government control, a collapse of tradtional society, and ethnic divisions. Here, too we find terrorists.

I agree most non-failed states are better than most failed states. Still, states usually fail for a reason, and it’s not that easy for outsiders to straighten things out. So I’d rather any interventions be limited and narrowly focused (e.g., getting rid of Osama bin Laden’s camps).
