O Baden-Powell, where art thou now?
T-shirts are less “militaristic” than khakis, so Scouting Canada thinks they’re what’s needed to revive their declining fortunes: “Scouts opt for new ‘cool’ uniforms”. They need something — there are only a quarter as many scouts as in the 60s, and numbers have dropped 30% in the past decade. Traditionalists will be able to keep their old uniforms, though. According to a spokeswoman (they’ve apparently done away with separate programs for Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts) “It comes back to choices … We feel that the time is right for an organization like ours … It’s a very highly supervised generation and we offer very safe programs … we just need to have it packaged right.” Sounds like the kind of thinking that really gets kids fired up!
