New York Times disaster as symbol of liberalism

The smug impenetrability of New York Times editor Howell Raines, writes the redoubtable Thomas Sowell, is indicative of a problem that affects not just Raines, and not just the Times, but our entire liberal culture.

And here’s an article by Roger Clegg at NRO making a key point about race preferences which I don’t think he’s ever made before: if employers are looking for “diverse” applicants, that ineluctably means hiring less qualified people. As obvious as that point is, many people still deny it.

People like those running the New York Times believe in racial preferences more than they do almost anything. It is the key to their world view. They are like believers in a medieval cult.

Speaking of “diversity,” I once asked a liberal friend why organizations like the New York Times don’t hire a few conservatives. “Wouldn’t that bring some diversity,?” I asked. He answered, “Er, ah, we don’t have that kind of diversity.”

I heard Justice Thomas on C-Span this morning answer a question from a student at Banneker High in D.C. on the matter of ‘diversity.’ The class was almost entirely black with some Hispanic.

The Justice asked students to look around and tell him whether this was a ‘diverse’ classroom. No one indicated that it was. Then he asked if anyone there felt they couldn’t get a decent education in this classroom. None of the students would say they couldn’t.

He then explained that true diversity is in the realm of ideas and approaches, et.al.

His point appeared to have carried, for the moment.
