Truth and lies

From a Canadian conservative website:

To make a conservative mad, tell him a lie. To make a liberal mad, tell him the truth.

At first glance this smile-bringer seems simply superficial and cute. BUT … after a moment’s reflection one sees ways in which it is profoundly true and laden with significance — political, philosophical, and moral significance.

What an excellent, instructive aphorism!

Of course one is not saying that conservatives are truthful simply by virtue of being designated as conservatives. What’s meant here by “conservatives,” I guess, is someone who lives in touch with reality and values reality; while liberals, almost by definition, deny the nature of reality and seek to construct reality into something else. They insist that there are no real differences between people, that all people can get along with each other, that all conflicts can be settled by negotiation, that force is not necessary and is always to be avoided, that there is no objective morality, that everything is a matter of opinion, and so on and so on. Liberals are in rebellion—whether moderate rebellion or radical rebellion—against the constitution of existence. Therefore they are committed to lies, and truth makes them angry.

Yes, it’s a cute smile-bringer, but that’s all.

I’m a liberal. I can’t speak for the entire spectrum of those on the left, but I’d love some truth — and a break from some of the lies — right about now.

- I’d love to be told the truth about our intelligence on Iraq’s WMD, to see how they differ from the administration’s hype that we were about to be destroyed by them and therefore couldn’t let U.N. inspections continue. (Hint: We still haven’t found any.)

- I’d love to be told the truth about our response to 9/11 and read the congressional report that Bush is trying to keep unreleased. (Hint: Why would he hide this?)

- I’d love to open up a newspaper one day and read that the Clintons were completely exonerated for Whitewater, Travelgate, et al. They were found of no wrongdoing in all these matters — it’s a fact — but many people seem to think that a $70-million investigation didn’t get to the bottom of their “criminality”. (Hint: Bush has skeletons in his closet that would make a left-wing Kenneth Starr sexually aroused — and we can’t even get the truth out about his going AWOL on his reserve duty.)

These examples only scratch the surface of the truth I’m looking for.

I’m curious though, what kind of lies make you, as conservatives, angry?

“I’m curious though, what kind of lies make you, as conservatives, angry?”

just so you know

as a rule of thumb, anything, whether it’s true or false doesn’t matter, which gores a conservative’s ox is ipso facto a lie which makes conservative angry.

don’t believe me? try it, it works like a charm. you’ll get called a liar or someother knee jerk nonsense everytime.

well almost everytime, there are a few intellectually honest conservatives who aren’t knee jerk, but they’re the exception to the rule.

Thanks, Abby, for thoroughly answering my question about your political views. You declined to answer directly, but the above certainly leaves no doubt whatosever.

Don’t have it any more. Sorry. Normally I always keep a record of web addresses, but for some reason didn’t this time. I looked for the quote at google but no luck.
