Large majority of Iraqis want U.S. to stay
Notwithstanding continuing attacks on American troops by holdovers from the Hussein regime, the signs are that the people of Iraq overwhelmingly welcome the U.S. presence. According to Iraq’s first-ever public opinion poll, 65 percent of Baghdad residents want the U.S. armed forces to remain in Iraq until the country is stable and secure; only 17 percent want American soldiers out now. This is welcome news coming from CBS, not known for support for the administration’s foreign policy. But I’d postpone the celebration for a while, because the article is surprisingly uninformative. It doesn’t say who took the poll and what method was used, or who was present hearing the responses. It doesn’t quote the questions so that we might see whether they were slanted or ambiguous, or what the margin of error was, or what the views of the missing 18% of Baghdadis are. I want the big majority (in favor of our staying to finish the job) to be real, but I want the facts even more. Posted by: frieda on June 22, 2003 8:07 AM |
