Neocons only oppose globalism when it’s anti-U.S.

Writing in The Weekly Standard, Lee Bockhorn criticizes both the current European caricatures of America and the looming possibility of a European superstate. Strangely, however, Bockhorn’s only criticism of such a superstate is the threat it would pose to American power. He ignores a more fundamental problem with EU political unification: that it is an evil thing in itself, bad for liberty under law, bad for Europe, bad for Western civilization, bad for the world. Bockhorn’s exclusive emphasis on the EU’s possible negative effect on America’s ability to project its power in the international arena makes it seem as though he would otherwise have no problem with a European superstate. This self-interested criticism echoes the Bush administration’s opposition to the International Criminal Court, which was based solely on the threat that the ICC could pose to American forces and peacekeepers, not on the fact that the ICC is a danger to everyone’s freedom.

This has been the problem all along with neoconservatives and mainstream conservatives vis à vis globalism. They accept and applaud the globalist project generally and the EU in particular, never questioning the EU’s nightmare project of absorbing the sovereign nations of Europe into a godless egalitarian unaccountable bureaucratic autocracy. But now that it appears that this monstrous project may constrain our own ability to project our political and military power around the world, suddenly the neoconservatives become alarmed by it.

I write an e-mail to Mr. Bockhorn asking him: “If a tyrannical European superstate did not present itself as an adversary to American power, how would you then feel about it?” He hasn’t replied.

I’m surprise that your post hasn’t received any comments. Most seem to believe that what happens in Europe won’t affect us. However, every time Europe falls under totalitarianism, the US has to bail out Europe. The following is an excellent article in Crisis Magazine about the upcoming perils of the EU. I have also excerpted a quote to demonstrate the extent of the power grab in Europe. I do not think that totalitarian is too strong of a word.

“This sobering reality is illustrated by the current negotiations between Poland and the EU. Poland is a candidate nation seeking admittance to the EU without having to give up its legal protection for the unborn at the national level. As it stands now, Poland’s pro-life laws could be overturned by EU mandate.
But Poland isn’t alone in fearing for its sovereignty. Consider the recent skirmish between an incensed Greek government and the European Parliament and courts. The court examined a Greek provision that permits the monks of Mount Athos to remain a men-only monastic island, as it has been since 1045. The court officially pronounced the ban on women a violation of human rights. The parliament passed a resolution that judged any exclusion of women at Mount Athos to be in violation of community nondiscrimination and gender equality legislation, as well as the provisions relating to free movement of persons within the EU. The Greek government angrily responded by reminding the court and the parliament that when Greece joined the EU, protection of the monastic community was part of its accession treaty.”

as israel works toward a full partner in the eu, it’ll be interesting to see how the neocons react to the eu’s threat to american hegemony.

i suspect their stance will become that of working towards a merger of nafta with the eu.
