Zionism as reluctant nationalism
A fascinating blog entry by Nelson Ascher, “Zionism as a Reluctant Nationalism.” Ascher argues that, far from being a late imitator of aggressive European-style nationalism, Zionism was a purely defensive project, initiated only after the Jews’ attempt to dissolve their own national identity (by means of assimilation with European nations) had spectacularly failed.
