Have the Church sex scandals turned the tide against liberalism?

A friend asked a friend who had recently converted to Roman Catholicism, how can so many people, particularly conservatives and intellectuals, be joining the Church at this time, with all the terrible sexual scandals in the priesthood and the corruption in the Church hierarchy that have been uncovered? He replied that the moral tone within the Church has actually improved as a result of the scandals, because the smarmy attitudes of recent decades, the enthusiasm for liberalism and for the wonderful “openness” that came with Vatican II, have received a mighty blow. This was only one person’s angle. Yet it is certainly hopeful to think that the discovery of the hideous moral corruption within the post-Vatican II has made the Church more serious, more conservative, and more devout.

John Senior noted that the only reason to convert to Catholicism is the only reason there ever was: because it’s true.

Sure, the human members of the Church will do some very stupid, even sinful, things. But things will get better.
