French National Assembly approves bill criminalizing anti-homosexual speech
The lower house of the French parliament has voted for a bill that would make the utterance of “homophobic” statements a crime punishable by a year’s prison term. The article does not give examples of such “homophobic” statements. Does it mean, for example, that if someone called someone the French equivalent of “fag,” the first person could go to jail for a year? One wonders if the law itself defines “homophobic” speech.
Only four members voted against the law, though many more abstained or failed to attend. The bill, which now becomes law if the Senate votes for it, has been strongly pushed by the used car salesman, excuse me, le Président de la République. Email entry |
