Acknowledging the horror
Notwithstanding the arguments that can be made about God or not-God in light of an apocalyptic disaster such as the Indonesian tsunami, may I suggest that believers are in error—and I include myself in this—when we turn away from the event itself with perhaps too much haste, treating it almost as an abstraction, in order to defend God from his doubters and enemies. Since we are arguing for the existence of God despite the horrors that happen on earth, it behooves us, in the name of simple honesty, to take in with open eyes the full scope of those horrors.
