Is Nichols not a monster after all?

I hope people are not swayed by Ashley Smith’s moving account of her hours with Brian Nichols into thinking something like, “Nichols isn’t really such a bad guy, he’s just confused.” It’s true that Nichols showed human qualities to Smith, did not harm her, and ultimately let himself be captured. But we should understand that predatory savages often have pacific and even sweet sides. That doesn’t change the fact that they’re predatory savages.
