Saudi democracy?
An interesting if perplexing symposium at FrontPage Magazine looks at the prospects of political reform in the Saudi kingdom. One participant worries that democratization of a population educated in extreme Wahhabi schools will only release more extremism. Another participant says that as a result of President Bush’s coddling of the Saudi regime, the Saudis are becoming more and more extreme and dangerous, and that pressure on them to democratize is the only way to stop future terrorist attacks on America. Regrettably, the symposium did not touch on the Saudis’ funding of virulent anti-American propaganda in U.S. mosques and schools and Bush’s total non-response to it, which, at best, shows grave dereliction of duty on Bush’s part, and, at worst, is an act of quasi-treason.
