“Captain Ed” rears his head in indignation, then folds

Last night I was mightily impressed that Ed Morrissey at Captain’s Quarters blog, a vocal Bush supporter, was in a towering mood of righteous indignation over the Miers nomination and the White House’s handling of same. He closed his blog entry with what seemed to me a clearly implied threat to withdraw his support not just from the nomination but from President Bush himself. Yet this evening, after having participated in a half-hour conference call today between leading conservatives bloggers and two Bush higher-ups, Ken Mehlman and Patrick Ruffini, who were touting the nomination, and after pointing out that Mehlman’s and Ruffini’s entire argument for Miers’ judicial philosophy still boils down to “trust me,” and after saying that he is “still less than impressed with Miers as a nominee,” Morrissey concludes: “Despite the idiotic response from the White House prior to this telecon, I’m inclined to support Miers.”

Boy, are these Bush supporters easy to placate. Just give them a little phone time, or give them a little weekly coffee klatch in the White House with some Bush lieutenant, and they meekly return to the fold. And to think I e-mailed Morrissey earlier today congratulating him on the fiery eloquence he showed yesterday. I won’t make that mistake again.
