It’s time to stop the anti-Christian bigotry of the Jewish left

Abraham Foxman of the Anti-Defamation League said in a speech last weekend to his organization:

Today we face a better financed, more sophisticated, coordinated, unified, energized and organized coalition of groups in opposition to our policy positions on church-state separation than ever before. Their goal is to implement their Christian worldview. To Christianize America. To save us! … What we’re seeing is a pervasive, intensive assault on the traditional balance between religion and state in this country. They’re trying to bring Christianity to all aspects of American life. They’re not just talking just about God and religious values but about Jesus and about Christian values. … [Evangelicals are becoming much more adept at] using elements of the government to achieve their goals. [The views of Evangelical political leaders are] moving into the mainstream. There’s no aspect of American life they’re not trying to impact…. We can’t use a fly swatter approach to this — it’s too serious.

Hillel Halkin rightly points out how hypocritical it is for Foxman to charge that Christians’ advancing their pro-Christian or pro-family policy agenda is somehow an illegitimate attack on Jews, while the ADL advances its secularist, anti-Christian agenda across the board. However, let’s go beyond the mere charge of hypocrisy, which has never struck me as a very meaningful or effective argument. Let’s up the ante in this debate and give Foxman something he can really scream about. Let us put into the mouth of a national Christian leader a statement about Jews that is the equivalent of Foxman’s statement about Christians:

Today we face a better financed, more sophisticated, coordinated, unified, energized and organized coalition of Jewish groups in opposition to our Christian and pro-family values than ever before. The Jews’ goal is to implement their secularist, anti-Christian worldview. To Judaize and secularize America. To liberate us! What we’re seeing is a pervasive, intensive assault on the traditional Christian and moral character of this country. They’re trying to bring a secular, anti-Christian view to all aspects of American life. They’re not just talking just about a level playing field for non-Christians but about eliminating Christianity and traditional moral values from any place in our society…. Jews are extremely adept at using the government, media, and schools to achieve their goals. The views of Jewish political leaders have taken over the mainstream. There’s no aspect of American life the Jews don’t control or influence …. We can’t use a fly swatter approach to this—it’s too serious.
