Bush: crack down on illegals while giving them amnesty

The Compassionate Conservative—now reincarnated as the Open-Borders Restrictionist—rides again. As reported by Bill Sammon in the Washington Times :

President Bush today will call for a crackdown on illegal immigration, a move aimed at further rallying conservatives who recently cheered Mr. Bush’s tough talk on Iraq and the Supreme Court. But the president will also renew his call for a program to allow Mexicans who have already entered the U.S. illegally to remain here for up to six years. That initiative has long angered conservatives who equate it with amnesty.

A correspondent comments:
Bush is fudging and squirming and trying to square this circle. It won’t work. As I’ve warned someone who asked me about compromise on this issue before,

“Don’t even try talking the talk, unless you’re 100% serious about walking the walk. Immigration opponents have been lied to and betrayed so many times, they have bull***t detectors that will pick up a white lie on the far side of Pluto. You cannot treat this as normal difference-splitting politics.”
