More illusions about Islam from the mainstream conservatives press

James Woolsey has an article at NRO saying that the real enemy we must oppose is Wahhabism, while “we must make common cause today with the hundreds of millions of decent Muslims with whom we have no quarrel.” This is worse than Daniel Pipes, since Pipes, despite his false notion of a historically moderate or potentially moderate Islam, to his credit remains always alert to the actual radicalism of supposed moderates, whereas Woolsey has an intellectual formula, “Wahhabism is the problem,” that would blind him to actual Islamic radicals, not to mention the radical nature of Islam as such.

We should also mention that NRO, with the exception of James Robbins’s recent review of Andrew Bostom’s The Legacy of Jihad, has published virtually nothing in the last couple of years about the true nature of Islam. For example, they stopped publishing articles by Bat Ye’or, whom they used to feature. All their writings on the subject of Islam nowadays are of the type that says, “Here is the discrete problem with Islam, let’s fix this,” or “There is the discrete problem with Islam, let’s fix that.” There is no consciousness at NRO that Islam itself is the problem.
