Nation of Minorities
Spelling out the suicidal logic of liberalism more clearly, Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin, speaking at some Islamic center, described his country as a “nation of minorities.” I’m trying to think what could be more demoralizing than thinking of one’s country in such terms. I’ve been writing since the late 1980s that multiculturalism means the end of nationhood. But I had to extract this conclusion out of the multicultural slogans, since the multiculturalists didn’t come right out and say it in so many words. Martin, however, has come pretty close. Reversing Theodore Roosevelt’s rejection of the idea of hyphenated Americans, Martin is saying that there are only hyphenated Canadians, no Canadians.
