Death of Britain watch (but I also believe in rebirth)

Here’s something appalling. Any citizen of a British Commonwealth country can vote in the general election for the British Parliament. He does not have to be a British citizen, he does not have to be in the process of becoming a British citizen. He simply needs to be a citizen of any Commonweatlh country or of the Republic or Ireland who happens to be residing in Britain at the moment.

The information came to me from a Commonwealth citizen residing in Britain. He had been told to his astonishement that he could vote in the elections for the European parliament. This law was passed by the Labor government under Tony Blair, apparently with no debate or controversty to speak of. I asked him if Commonwealth citizens could also vote for the British parliament, and he found a BBC web page with following information.

Who can vote?

You must be registered to vote, be at least 18-years-old on polling day, be British or be a Commonwealth or Republic of Ireland citizen living in the UK.
