Steyn has been saying this for two years
Correction: Mark Steyn’s article at the Spectator which I discuss below is not a new article, as I had assumed, but was published in April 2004. I didn’t notice the article’s date because (1) a reader sent the article to me today, or rather a link to a copy of it that had been posted at Free Republic, which is the version I read online (also the article date in the Free Republic format doesn’t exactly pop out at you); (2) the article’s themes and even its exact phrases are identical to what Steyn has been repeatedly writing in the last month; and (3) it actually goes farther than his articles of the last month, saying that “the West,” and not just Europe, is dying, so it seemed to represent a progression in his recent defeatist views, rather than something he had written two years ago. It is odd that Steyn is now recycling, in his “Winston Churchill” speech, in The New Criterion, and elsewhere, the exact phrases and argument he was using two years ago.
