Air passengers are Eloi, security personnel are Morlocks

While a government-owned company in an Arab country gets to manage the loading and unloading in terminals in U.S. ports, and while the president calls Americans racist if they have a problem with this, air travelers in this country, writes Peggy Noonan in a must-read column, are subject to worse indignities than ever, thanks to policies put in place by that same president. He really loves America, doesn’t he?

In fact, it occurs to me that President Bush has the same view of America as does Pennsylvania State University, which declares in its Statement on Intolerance: “As an educational institution, the University has a mandate to address problems of a society deeply ingrained with bias and prejudice.” Bush evidently feels he has the same mandate. He subjects the majority American population to humiliating and demoralizing security procedures, in order to teach them that it’s racist to think that Muslims ought to get more attention from airport security than regular Americans do. And he brings exactly the same attitude into the ports issue.
