James Ceaser quotes VFR at Heritage
Two years ago at the Weekly Standard James Ceaser of the University of Virginia spoke some stunningly unconventional truths about the difficulties of assimilating Hispanic immigrants, and about the role that elites, including neocon elites, had played in ignoring the problem. I was amazed and pleased by the article, but most of all by the fact that it had appeared in the Weekly Standard of all places. I’ve just found out that Ceaser gave a talk at the Heritage Foundation last November on “Creed versus Culture” in which he quotes me and mentions me several times as a representative of the view that culture is primary. Ceaser even says at one point, “Maybe Auster is right and Muslims cannot be assimilated.” However, Ceaser remains on the fence and continues to treat the issue rather abstractly. To hear the talk, which is in streaming video, go to the lecture archive page, and scroll down until you find Ceaser’s lecture.
