The biggest liar in American history

Here’s a story that makes no sense. According to Rep. James Sensenbrenner, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee and the House’s point man on immigration, the measure to treat illegal immigration as a felony was put into the House bill last fall at the White House’s urging, and Sensenbrenner now says he’s angry with President Bush for turning his back on that provision. But why would Bush have pushed the felony measure? Given his entire stand on the immigration issue, it makes no sense that he would have done this. Naturally, the reporter, Frederic Frommer of the AP, didn’t bother to ask Sensenbrenner such an obvious question.

Here’s something else. Despite Bush’s insistence that he is not calling for amnesty, Sensenbrenner truthfully says, “Well it is an amnesty, because it allows people who have broken the law to stay in the country.” In reply, Alex Conant, a White House spokesman, says: “The president has repeatedly and forcefully rejected amnesty. Under his plan, you’re going to have to pay stiff fines, follow the law, stay employed, learn English and—after achieving all those things—go to the back of the line.”

Go to the back of what line? For citizenship? Citizenship is merely icing on the cake. By the time the former illegal aliens get on the back of the line for citizenship, they will already have legal permanent residency in the U.S. And that is amnesty.

Clinton had been the biggest liar in American history. Bush—the man who pledged to restore dignity and honor to the presidential office—has surpassed him.
