Muslim Miss England turns on England
In the previous entry on the idea that Islam is a single continuum, a reader pointed out that there is little or no criticism coming from the Islamic world of Al Qaeda’s repeated ultimatums that we must “convert to Islam or suffer the consequences.” Therefore, he concluded, Muslims “are all collectively responsible for the consequences of their active or tacit support of jihad and terrorism.” As supporting evidence for the reader’s observation—and for my view that reaching out to “moderate Muslims” only makes the situation worse—consider the gracious comments of the first Miss England who is a Muslim. Nineteen-year-old Hammasa Kohistani is ending her year as Miss England by attacking the country that crowned her. Her being chosen to represent England in the Miss World contest, she says, was just “sugar coating” for Muslims, who have actually become more alienated from England over the past year. She continues:
“Even moderate Muslims are turning to terrorism to prove themselves. They think they might as well support it because they are stereotyped anyway. It will take a long time for communities to start mixing in more.”Now there are some great “moderates” for you—otherwise peaceful and law-abiding folk who suddenly turn to mass murder because they’ve been stereotyped! After all, if you’ve been stereotyped, what else is there for a body to do but go out and turn 20 or 30 subway riders into flying body parts? And what dread stereotyping is it that turns these gentle people to terrorism? Stereotyping them as terrorists? No. Stereotyping them as moderates and asking them to help us against the terrorists. The story continues:
The Prime Minister told MPs last month that moderate Muslims were not doing enough to tackle extremists in their own community. What Miss Kohistani is saying is that by asking the Muslims in Britain to take action against the extremism and terrorism in their community, a perfectly reasonable and indeed urgently necessary expectation, Blair has unfairly linked the Muslims with terrorism, and this in turn has driven some of them to become terrorists themselves. As I have said before, reaching out to “moderates” and asking them to reform Islam only increases their hostility, because we are putting them on the spot, telling them to be different from the way they are, insisting that they change their religion into something that we will approve of. How could such importunate demands not spark greater resentment and conflict? (Consider the anger of Muslims in Australia after federal Treasurer Peter Costello demanded that they denounce terrorism.) By contrast, if we were to follow the civilizationist strategy I have proposed and eschew any efforts to reform Islam, if we would tell Muslims that we understand perfectly well what their religion is and what it demands of them, and that we know that they can’t change their religion and that we can’t change it either, but that we also know that we have to protect ourselves from it, such honesty might win their grudging respect. I am showing more regard for Islam—because I acknowledge its existence and take it seriously—than do soft reformist liberals like Bush and Blair who remain staunchly blind to the reality of Islam and its unchangeable doctrines, and who vainly imagine that all Muslims are simply democrats who haven’t yet realized that they are democrats. But the more radical point here is the one made by the reader I quoted above. Muslims’ resentful reaction, including their threat to turn terrorist, in response to our reasonable request that they help us against the terrorists proves beyond doubt that they are not on our side, they are on the terrorists’ side. And therefore we should announce that we will hold Muslims collectively responsible for any jihadist and terrorist acts performed against our society. Nothing should be off the table, from the closing of mosques and the mass deportation of Muslims to (as Tom Tancredo has cogently argued) the nuclear destruction of Mecca and Medina in retaliation for possible future WMD attacks.
Anthony D., who had sent me the story, comments:
In typical Islamic fashion, Miss England turns on her enablers and sides with her Moslem co-religionists, who according to her can be expected to act out in murderous, traitorous, insurrectionist ways towards their foolish hosts because they “feel” targeted.
