New book urges containment
Finally, a common sense alternative to Bush democratization on one hand and Democratic surrender on the other. Containment: Rebuilding a Strategy against Global Terror, by Ian Shapiro, seems to have at least some key similarities to the Separationist strategy I have been advocating for years. Here is a description at Amazon (no readers’ reviews are posted yet):
In this powerfully argued book, Ian Shapiro shows that the idea of containment offers the best hope for protecting Americans and their democracy into the future. His bold vision for American security in the post-September 11 world is reminiscent of George Kennan’s historic “Long Telegram,” in which the containment strategy that won the Cold War was first developed. David H. writes:
I am cautiously optimistic about this book. In my brief perusing of the author’s other titles and reactions to those books, I have not been able to deduce much about his ideological stance, but even if the only worthwhile contribution this book makes is the championing of containment then it will have done us a welcome service. Concerning the specifics of the work and exactly how useful it will be, I am hoping that more persons will comment on this book at Amazon than on his other works; ideally a reader of VFR will read and comment on it.
