Is Spengler really me?

I just came upon a Spanish language blog called Desculpan las Molestias, where there is an article speculating on the identity of Spengler, the mysterious columnist for the Asia Times. The author suggests various candidates for the real Spengler, including David Pryce-Jones and Edward Luttwak, though my Spanisn and the computer-generated English translation at Altavista are not good enough to clarify the author’s reasoning. In the last paragraph, the author mentions an article by me about Spengler, “The thinking man’s Mark Steyn,” and he suggests that because I criticize the neoconservative view of Islam, and Spengler also criticizes it, I may be Spengler’s doppelganger. But since the author points out that I strongly criticize Spengler, why would he think that I am Spengler? It seems very oddball, but if anyone who reads Spanish well enough to make sense of the piece would like to do so, it would be interesting to know what the author’s point is, if any (I suspect there isn’t any).

If you ask, Is Spengler really Auster, you can also ask, Is Auster really Spengler? Since I regularly read Spengler (it’s like a car crash at times, I just can’t help looking) and VFR (no excuses needed), I say, “No, that’s silly.” People do wish they knew who Spengler was, but we’d probably find out he’s just a no-account back-bench Tory MP.

LA replies:

He’s certainly detached and disengaged enough to be a Tory MP. What, after all, is contemporary Toryism about but not caring seriously about anything, while maintaining a posture of superiority?
