Western art and consciousness
Along with the contentious issues with which we deal at this site, we want to remember that our ultimate object is not to fight but to participate in truth, beauty, and goodness, especially as they are incarnated in our own civilization. From this past May, here is a discussion on “The uniqueness of Western art and consciousness.” And from last year, here are my discussions of the 15th century Netherlandish painter Hans Memling’s Portrait of Maria Portinari, his Portrait of a Man, and his Portrait of Tommaso Portinari.
