VFR style
Readers may have felt at times that there is a lack of consistency at VFR regarding when I refer to a person as “Mr.” or “Miss,” and when I just use the person’s last name. In fact I do have a consistent rule, though it may not be immediately apparent. When I am addressing or speaking about someone who is commenting at VFR, I generally, not always, use the title and last name. When I’m speaking about people elsewhere,—people in the news, public figures, writers, I simply refer to them by their last name. As for President Bush, I call him “President Bush” the first time his name appears in an article, and “Bush” thereafter. I sometimes have other names for him, but we don’t have to go into that now.
