Huckabee comes out against birthright citizenship for illegals
From the Washington Times:
Mike Huckabee wants to amend the Constitution to prevent children born in the U.S. to illegal aliens from automatically becoming American citizens, according to his top immigration surrogate—a radical step no other major presidential candidate has embraced. This is great news. Birthright citizenship, one of the biggest immigration-related problems we have, has never been discussed in the mainstream. Huckabee’s raising it assures that it now will be. See VFR’s articles from last year on the birthright citizenship issue. UPDATE: Byron York at The Corner says this is an erroneous story. Here is the statement York posts from Huckabee denying it: “I do not support an amendment to the constitution that would prevent children born in the U.S. to illegal aliens from automatically becoming American citizens. I have no intention of supporting a constitutional amendment to deny birthright citizenship.”
I note that the entire Washingon Times story comes from Jim Gilchrist, who told the reporter, Steven Dinan, how Huckabee had told Gilchrist that he supported such an amendment. It is very odd that the Times would publish a story on a candidate’s new position based only on what another person said, without confirming it with the campaign. Email entry |
