Presidential poll results

Here are the preliminary results of the VFR presidential poll, conducted January 7-9, 2008, with 109 persons participating. I am sorry for the delay in getting this out. For now, there are the overall results for Question No. 1 and Question No. 2, the latter being the heart of the poll. Also included are every answer to Question No 5 on the three biggest issues facing the country. On a quick glance, the similarity of the answers is remarkable. It will be interesting to see in how many of these answers “immigration” is mentioned and how many times it is the first answer, as well as how many of the sets of three answers consist of immigration, Islam, and then a choice of education, cultural/moral deterioration, growth of government, and economic imbalances. There will be more later about party affiliation, ideological identification, patterns of voting, extra comments, and so on.

The most interesting aspect of Question No. 2 is the variety, and sometimes the striking idiosyncrasy, in the individual patterns of voting, of which there are many, given that the poll presented ten possible elections races and required a fair amount of thought. One problem is that the overall numbers, say in the four Huckabee and McCain races, are so similar that they give the impression that everyone voted more or less according to the same pattern. This was not at all the case. Respondents kept distributing their votes in surprising and highly individual ways. But the only way I’ll be able to demonstrate that is by looking at individual questionnaires.

While there was tremendous individual variety, as might be expected, there were also broad common patterns. The most common was voting for Thompson and Romney in the Thompson and Romney races, while voting for None/Third party in the Giuliani, Huckabee, and McCain races. There were 22 respondents who followed that pattern. The second most common pattern was voting straight Republican in all ten races, which was done by eleven respondents. There were also three respondents who voted straight “None/Third party” in all ten races, which suggests we’re not as radical-right a group as some may think.

Here are Questions No. 1 and No. 2 and responses having to do with the presidential race, followed by Question No. 5 and responses.

1. At present which candidate, if any, do you support for the Republican nomination?

2. Based on your current views, how would you vote in the ten possible general election races listed below? The answer can be one of the two candidates listed, or “None,” or some independent or write-in candidate of your choice. (Note: From the point of view of this questionnaire, not voting is the same as voting for a third-party candidate, since the main purpose is to find out if VFR readers would vote for the Republican or not vote for the Republican.)
