Blowin’ in the wind with Richard Lowry—toward McCain

In an entry the other day entitled “Blowin’ in the wind with Richard Lowry—away from McCain,” I said that based on Lowry’s unprecedentedly harsh criticisms of McCain in an interview with Hugh Hewitt it was hard to see him endorsing McCain if he were the nominee. How foolish of me. Here is Lowry at the Corner tonight:

Congrats to Sen. McCain [Rich Lowry]
He was flat on his back, and got back up. When he was still down, I didn’t entirely discount him somehow winning NH, but I didn’t see him going anywhere after that. Well, he has. I don’t believe him on immigration and his story on taxes isn’t very straightforward. Over the weekend, he took a shot on Romney on the surge that should have been beneath him. But in the scheme of things, he has run an honorable campaign, based on tireless retail campaigning and strong conviction on national-security matters. If he makes it all the way to the nomination, his will be a legendary campaign.

In his interview with Hewitt, Lowry said that he thought McCain was lying through his teeth on immigration—the very issue that, by lying through his teeth about it, McCain had managed to resuscitate his campaign and now win Florida. Yet Lowry says that McCain has run an honorable campaign! How could it be honorable, if the main foundation of it is a bare-faced lie?

Here is how Lowry’s colleague at National Review, John Derbyshire, reacted to McCain’s victory in Florida:

Romneybot lost a big one? In the immortal words of Little Richard: Boo [shriek!] hoo [shriek!] hoo [shriek!] hoo
