269
A staggering fact. As told by Tom Mountain in the Newton Tab (via Powerline), 269 men from one small city, Newton, Massachusetts, died in World War II. Mountain catalogs many of their deaths, which took place in every theater, under every circumstance. Newton’s population in the 2000 census was 83,829. Presumably it was significantly less in 1940, perhaps 60,000. Donald W. writes:
According to my 1959 Information Please Almanac, the population of Newton, Mass., in 1940 was 69,873. You weren’t far off. Posted by Lawrence Auster at May 26, 2008 01:01 PM | Send Email entry |
