A British atheist and Darwinist who likes VFR

El Ingles writes:

I have been a regular reader of your blog for only the last couple of months, if that, but (and I don’t normally write things like this to ANYONE) I just wanted to tell you how much I’ve been enjoying it. By which I do not mean that I agree with everything you say, far from it, only that you are vastly more insightful and thought-provoking than anyone else out there, not to mention bone-crunchingly honest. and quite funny as well, which is not always an easy strength to juggle along with everything else.

I am only writing this because it occurred to me that, of late, I have been looking forward to checking what’s new on your site far more than anything on any other site. and I say this as a British atheist, (vague) libertarian and convinced Darwinist!

Only very occasionally do I write anything to anyone encountered online, but I felt I owed you some thanks for your hugely stimulating site.

All the best,

LA replies:

Thank you very much. It’s very kind of you. I’m happy you’re getting so much out of VFR. And especially glad to hear that my criticisms of Darwinism haven’t driven you away.

P.S. Did you know that El Ingles is the nickname of Robert Jordan, the protaganist of Hemingway’s For Whom the Bell Tolls? He’s an American fighting alongside guerrillas in the Spanish civil war, but the Spaniards don’t distinguish between Americans and English, so they just call him El Ingles.

A reader has just reminded me that El Ingles is the author of an article last month at Gates of Vianna, “Surrender, Genocide … or What?” which laid out scenarios of possible European-Muslim clashes in a future Europe that were so graphic and disturbing that Gates of Vienna was expelled from Pajamas Media, a consortium of “respectable” conservative blogs.
