Brazil reported to be about to make criticism of homosexual conduct a criminal offense

(Note: Ken Hechtman sends a link, below, showing that the bill is real.)

According to a report by the Catholic News Agency, the Brazilian House of Representatives has unanimously passed a bill that would, in CNA’s words, punish with prison sentences “any kind of moral, ethical, philosophical or psychological expression that questions homosexual practices.”

The story is too extreme. I don’t believe it. Here it is:

Brazilian law would prohibit Christian teaching on homosexuality

Rio de Janeiro, Jul 15, 2008 / 01:36 pm (CNA).- The Brazilian Senate is considering a bill approved unanimously and without debate by the country’s House of Representatives that aims to promote homosexuality and prohibit Christian teaching on the issue, under the guise of combating discrimination.

According to the Association of the Defense of Life, the bill would make it crime punishable by five years in prison to impede expressions of “homosexual affection” in public places or private places open to the public.

It would also punish those who deny employment openly homosexual teachers in schools with up to three years imprisonment, making it impossible for Catholic or Christian schools to prevent homosexuals from joining their faculties.

The bill would also impose prison sentences on any kind of moral, ethical, philosophical or psychological expression that questions homosexual practices. In this way, “a priest, a pastor, a teacher or even an average citizen who says in a sermon, a classroom or public conversation that homosexual acts are sinful, disordered or an illness could be denounced and detained,” the association said.

Anthony Damato writes:

I think the story is true. I look around the Net a bit, and it seems the Socialist party has been busy trying to normalize abortion under all circumstances, illegalizing the parents right to corporeal punishment, and heavily promoting homosexuality, and smashing any “thought crimes” associated with it. Sounds like the standard Marxist M.O. to me. Why though? If the story is true, what’s the real objective? The story appears authentic, based on the availability of information on the Web so far.

What do they want? Obviously to destroy Christianity for one, and the West as well. They hate God and the moral order.

I will find out more about the story to verify its validity.

LA replies:

The bill was passed through their House of Representatives unanimously? There was no opposition to such a radical thing? I find that hard to believe.

Ken Hechtman writes:

Here’s a (less than perfect) translation of an article from the Brazilian Senate Journal.

The anti-discrimination bill is real. The claim that it was passed “without debate” is not.

Janet R. writes (comment sent July 16, posted August 30):

I’ve been trying to find out more information about the status of the homsexual rights law and I understand that it is still to be voted by the Senate. As they recently voted against decriminalising abortion perhaps there is hope that it won’t pass.Evangelicals have been protesting against the introduction of the law and they are a powerful lobby group here in Brazil.

The point I would like to make is that it is the Catholic Church here in Brazil that is largely responsible for this state of affairs.

Because of the reaction to the military dictatorship pratically everybody in Brazil is a liberal.Once again, the left has rewritten history. Everyone believes that opponents of the military dictatorship were fighting for democracy instead of trying to implant a Communist dictatorship.

Liberation theolgy has totally corrupted the Catholic Church in Latin America. The Catholic Church was on the side of the terrorists and founded groups such as ” Tortura Nunca Mais” ( Torture Never Again) and they co-founded the socialist Labour Party which is currently in power and which is trying to introduce Communism in South America or at least the Chinese version of state capitalism. This Labour party is the usual mixture of socialists, Communists, feminists, environmentalists etc.

There is a terrorist group of so-called “Landless peasants” whose stated aim is to destroy the strong, efficient and capitalist Brazilian agricultural industry. The schools in their camps, which are paid for by the State, teach Mao, Trotsky and Lenin. Members of this terrorist group actually receive welfare benefits! They invade private property, cause millions of dollars worth of damage and have killed innocent police, caretakers and farmers. Not a word is written about this in the international press. One American activist nun, Dorothy Stang, is killed and the whole world is up in arms. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not in favour of killing nuns, but I am also against the killing of police, farmers and caretakers. This terrorist group is actively supported by Catholic priests and bishops. I do not undertand why the Pope has not excomunicated them. I have to drive miles every Sunday to go to a Mass where the priest doesn’t preach Communism from the pulpit.

There are no organised right wing parties in Brazil. Practically all the parties have some variant of “socialism” in their title. The left has dominated the universities and schools. Brazil is an example of the succesful application of Gramsci. There are a few right wing writers who through their blogs are voices crying in the wilderness. One of the best is Olavo de Carvalho, who lives in the U.S. and some of his articles are translated into English. If anyone is interested in reading more his site address is www.olavodecarvalho.org/. Perhaps, I’m obtuse but it is living in Brazil that has sent me so far to the right. I sometimes wonder if had I continued to live in England I might not have made the same journey.
