Teacher’s union spent $1 million against Prop. 8

The California Teacher’s Association donated $1 million to the campaign to stop Proposition 8, which obviously had nothing to do with education. As Larry Sand (a VFR reader) writes in a column in the Los Angeles Daily News, all of the CTA’s funds come from members’ dues, yet the members had no say over the expenditure of those funds on behalf of a political cause with which many of them disagreed. However, as Sand explains, even in the non-right-to-work state of California, teachers do have the right not to pay the part of their union dues that goes to supporting political causes. Unfortunately, he hints, most of them don’t seem to realize that they have this option.
