A modest proposal for ending all conflict on earth
As noted by John Derbyshire at the Corner, Gunnar Heinsohn writing in The Wall Street Journal says that the U.S. can solve the Israel-Palestinian conflict by importing hundreds of thousands of young Palestinian males to the U.S. over the next 15 years. Meanwhile, certain opponents of Israel, such as the crazed Paul Craig Roberts, have said that we can solve the Israel-Palestinian conflict by importing all five million Israeli Jews to the U.S. Thus the people who see the Israelis as bullies and imperialists, like Paul Craig Roberts, want to bring the Israelis here, and the people who see the Palestinians as dangerous terrorists, like the Wall Street Journal, want to bring the Palestinians here. All we have to do is decide which of the two sides we should bring here. I think the idea is clearly a winner, and ought to be universally applied. America can end all foreign ethnic conflicts on earth simply by bringing one of the two sides in each conflict to the U.S. as refugees. But that leads to another problem: what about the resulting ethnic conflicts in the U.S., with all those different peoples living here and jostling together? No problem. With steady improvements in the technology of space travel over the coming decades, we can end all ethnic conflict in America by sending the entire, conflict-ridden U.S. population to other planets in giant rocket ships. Then the earth will be at peace at last. After all, doesn’t it say in the Bible that nothing we plan to do will be impossible for us?
