Tabloid world
I saw this at a newstand on Broadway today and broke out laughing at the almost artistic absurdity of it. These tabloids have a way of constructing an alternative reality that can be quite entertaining, especially when it deals with some supposed crisis in a marriage like the Bushes’ that everyone knows is solid (“Laura walks out on Bush”); and, in any case, if there were a crisis in the Bush marriage, the people who knew about it wouldn’t be telling it to the Globe. The story reports that the Bushes are separated, with Bush living at the Crawford ranch while Laura is in their new $2 million home in Dallas; that he’s in deep despair over the country’s rejection of him and the widespread view of him as a failed president (which, if he is feeling that way, I can’t say it’s not deserved, as the combination of arrogance and bad faith in this man’s conduct of the presidency is beyond calculation); that he’s been calling Condi late at night seeking solace; and that Laura has been suspicious of their relationship.
Paul K. writes:
I too laughed when I saw the cover on “The Globe” today. It conjured up a plausible image of the failed president repeatedly phoning his last cheerleader, seeking reassurance that the brilliance of his geopolitical vision will one day be recognized. His forlorn, baffled look works well with her “I’m getting a headache” gesture. Posted by Lawrence Auster at April 02, 2009 07:48 PM | Send Email entry |
