Division among the deniers

Mark Weber, for 30 years a Holocaust denier and for the last 14 years the director of the main Holocaust denial organization, the Institute for Historical Review, recently wrote that the organized Nazi extermination of the Jews did happen after all, while he maintained that the war against the “Jewish-Zionist power” must continue by other means than Holocaust denial. Now he is being attacked by other Holocaust deniers for his apostasy. The French Holocaust denier Robert Fourrison, who has known Weber since 1979, writes that Weber was always a weak reed. For example, in 1993, when Fourisson asked Weber and others whether they believed the Nazi gas chambers had ever existed, Weber answered, “Maybe.” The article takes you inside the Holocaust denial movement, if that’s a place you care to go to for ten minutes.

Dan R. writes:

I’m not terribly interested in reading the article, but a comment on Weber: I sat next to him for one session during the 2008 American Renaissance Conference and found him to be friendly, with a sense of humor. I was also present for a couple of minutes while he was talking to Jonathan Tilove, the Newhouse reporter who’s covered every AR conference and also is Jewish. In the short time I was there Weber did not rant and made an effort to be friendly. I’ve heard his sister is married to a Jewish man and lives in Israel. I can understand Fourrisan’s comment—in this case I’d take it as an unintended compliment.

LA replies:

Yes, by all accounts (including my own—I spoke with him briefly at the AR conference in 1994), Weber is personally nice. And this “nice” person sees the “Jewish-Zionist power” as the main threat to the world; he admits having used Holocaust denial as a means of fomenting opposition to and hatred of Jews; he cheers the fact that hatred of Israel is rising world-wide; and he treats as his allies insane Muslims who seek to organize the entire Muslim world to fight Israel and the Jews. Yes, a lovely fellow.
