Nietzsche’s Last Man as conservative French editorialist

Yves Threard, an editor of Le Figaro, sometimes thought to be a conservative newspaper, has written an editorial supporting the admission of Turkey into the EU:

True, Europe is not infinitely expandable. But I think, personally, that it is today less a continent, than an exemplary foundation of values: justice, law, solidarity… Notions that should be spread to guarantee peace in the world and to prevent the clash of civilizations. Which is enough to justify reaching out to Turkey. Geography matters very little. What does count is History on the move.

Tiberge provides some commentary on this, but I’m not going to bother analyzing it, except to say that it is a perfect example of the terminal spiritual condition—a combination of supreme complacency and intellectual death—that liberalism produces in human beings.
