Open borders pow-wow

Tamar Jacoby, who for some years now has been the most relentless, ubiquitous, vociferous, and unprincipled open-borders proponent, like America’s own Joan of Arc in reverse, held a closed-door conference in June on how to pass the legalize-the-illegal-aliens and triple-legal-immigration bill that was stopped in 2006 and 2007. One of the participants took copious notes of the proceedings and passed them to Jim Robb of NumbersUSA, who has posted the whole works plus his commentary.

The most notable quote comes from Jacoby herself: “The basic goal is to promote the free flow of labor into the USA.” Which would be sort of like the captain of the Titanic saying, “The basic goal is to promote the free flow of the waters of the north Atlantic into my ship.”

Many of other participants, when they’re not talking tactics, emphasize the country’s need for workers.

But the truth is that Jacoby and her allies, though they are paid by pro-cheap labor business interests, don’t personally care one fig about the U.S. economy. Helping the economy is the rhetorical tactic they use to make the open borders cause seem unquestionable and irresistible. Think of how for the last many years the constant theme of Britain’s governing Laborites has been that Britain must have numerically unrestricted immigration to power its economy. Does anyone seriously believe that these these left-wingers were actually motivated by such practical, mundane concerns? Of course not. Their aim was not material, but spiritual: to break Britain, to break whatever remains of the Old Order, so that it can never return. Similarly, when Jacoby says that “The basic goal is to promote the free flow of labor into the USA,” her driving objective is not to strengthen the economy. It is to break America. In another time and place she would have been a Bolshevist. But Communism won’t sell in America. So she pushes open borders instead.

Fantastic insight. Too often, when confronted with perfidy of the Tamar kind, we take our opponent’s argument at face value. We then painstakingly explain the various sorts of economic damage that mass Third-World immigration causes. That’s all well and good, and perhaps worthwhile depending on the context, but we should always remember the core issue as you have expressed it.

Richard W. writes:

We have 9.5 percent unemployment in the USA. And that is just the official number, there are many compelling arguments that the real number is higher. The number is much higher in some locations. In fact many Obama-supporting urban areas are among the regions with the highest unemployment. For instance metro Detroit and Portland, Oregon, are both Obama voting states with mostly Democratic congressmen.

The idea of selling “open borders for labor” at a time like this is laughable. The advocates for such a policy will find themselves overwhelmed by angry citizens, and not just GOP voters or right wingers, either. Imagine being an unemployed UAW member in Michigan seeing your Congressman spend his time fighting to admit many more unskilled laborers to the USA.

For this reason the entire amnesty debate will have to be couched in some other terms. The “Wall Street Journal” argument is DOA. Expect the claims to revolve around need for family unification, social justice, cost savings or other more palatable excuses.

No matter what the supposed justification I agree that in most every case the real desire is either to deconstruct our nation by overwhelming it with 3rd world immigrants as a hard-left tactic, or in some cases simply to facilitate the demographic takeover by Hispanics as the core concern.

LA replies:

I agree with you on the hard case for amnesty and increased immigration in a time of recession. The impression I got from the quotes of the Jacoby pow-wow were of a bunch of people trying to keep their spirits up because that was their job, as it were, but recognizing that the winds are against them.

Bill Carpenter writes:

Commentary’s providing a platform, year after year, for the pernicious Tamar Jacoby should convince anyone who needs convincing of what “con” means in “neocon.”
