Yes, Christianity removed certain barriers between people. No, Christianity did not eliminate all human distinctions.

In a continuation of my exchange with Dutch reader Gilbert B. which began on October 14, Gilbert quotes biblical passages which, in the usual literalist, context-free manner, he interprets as commands for open borders and the welcoming of all foreigners, and I reply.

It was my earlier reply to Gilbert, in which I took exception to his hostility to the “founding and formative religion of our civilization,” that set off the big thread at Mangan’s.
