Who are the sentimentalists? Who are the realists?

Darwinian atheists pride themselves on their tough-minded realism about the material nature of the world, while sneering at Christians as weak-minded, sentimental escapists who “believe in a big, magic Santa Claus in the sky.” In an exchange with one such Darwinian atheist, I argue that it is the Darwinians who are really the sentimental escapists—because they can’t handle the materialist implications of their own world view, and construct an imaginary world of consciousness, value, and purpose to escape from it.
