The health care Babel
A major frustration of watching the debate is that the Republicans never respond to what is literally the Democrats’ sole argument for the bill, which is that it provides access to health care insurance for most Americans who don’t have it now, so that no one in need will every go without health care again. Rep. Geoff Davis (R-Kentucky), a former Army Ranger, was the first representative I heard tonight who replied to the Democrats’ position, and he did so by raising the discussion to the philosophical and spiritual level. He said something like this: Not every human desire can be satisfied. If we try to do so, we turn our desires into idols and we wreck our country.
